Laos: Christian Persecution Intense as Government Demands Christians Renounce Jesus Christ

The following is an unedited press release from International Christian Concern (ICC). Please check out their website at www.persecution.org for more on the persecution and genocide of Christians around the world.

Pastor’s Daughter in Laos Trapped with Dilemma

By ICC’s Intern for Southeast Asia R.R

05/27/2020 Washington D.C. (International Christian Concern) – Communist nations in South East Asian countries are persecuting Christians because they consider Christianity a threat to their countries. Laos, for instance, has made anyone who is a Christian, a government target. Recently, the Lao government has targeted Nang Tookta Phetsomphone, who is pending trial for the killing of her Chinese employer when he attempted to rape her. Her family is put in an impossible situation by the district of Khamkuet in Bolikhamxay Province, refusing to release her unless they renounce their faith in Jesus Christ.

Pastor Bountheung Phetsomphone, her father, is an influential pastor in Laos. He is currently the leader of the Nongpong village church and was arrested twice. On August 22, 2012, the village evicted his family; their community also refused 300 other Christian residents the right to continue their residence unless they renounce their faith. On September 2, 2015, five police officers broke into a Christian family’s home and detained him and another leader for “spreading the Christian faith.”

Their witnessing resulted in many people converting to Christianity.  The Geneva Human Rights Hearing against the Government of Laos mentioned Pastor Bountheung because of how the government has treated him for his evangelism. His resilience has stood sturdy for years, until now.

His daughter, Nang Tookta, was an employee for a Chinese national store owner in the Khamkuet District. Because her boss stopped paying her wages, she resigned. One month later, she was lured back by a phone call to negotiate the payments he owed her. Upon arrival, she was pushed into a restroom, overpowered, and threatened with a knife. Fighting for her life, she got a hold of the blade and killed him.

Tookta immediately called the neighbors and villagers and reported the incident. However, she was detained ever since that day, moving from the district jail to the provincial prison, in which the provincial jail did not file charges.

Be that as it may, the district where Tookta’s father experienced persecution refuses Tookta’s release or to drop the case. The district authorities are using her situation as leverage against the whole family, explicitly targeting Pastor Bountheung. Only when they renounce their faith and pay a fine of US$11,000, will they “consider” releasing her.

Their treatment is punishment for the pastor’s beliefs and ministry. The district is making an example of Pastor Bountheung, and in doing so, exploiting his daughter’s trauma.

ICC is publicizing her case to spread awareness and increase pressure on the district to release her or reduce the fine. Please pray for Nang Tookta’s pending trial, for her family, who are put in an impossible situation by the Laos district of Khamkuet.

President Trump's 2020 Memorial Day Speech

The following is the text of President Donald Trump's speech at the Memorial Day Ceremony at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine on May 25, 2020.

THE PRESIDENT:  I stand before you at this noble fortress of American liberty to pay tribute to the immortal souls who fought and died to keep us free.  Earlier today, the First Lady and I laid a wreath in their sacred honor at Arlington National Cemetery.  Now we come together to salute the flag they gave their lives to so boldly and brilliantly defend.  And we pledge, in their cherished memories, that this majestic flag will proudly fly forever.

We’re joined for today’s ceremony by Secretary of Defense Mark Esper; Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt; the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley; Congressman Andy Harris; and a number of service members and veterans of the Armed Forces.  The dignity, daring, and devotion of the American military is unrivaled anywhere in history and any place in the world.

In recent months, our nation and the world have been engaged in a new form of battle against an invisible enemy.  Once more, the men and women of the United States military have answered the call to duty and raced into danger.  Tens of thousands of service members and National Guardsmen are on the frontlines of our war against this terrible virus — caring for patients, delivering critical supplies, and working night and day to safeguard our citizens.

As one nation, we mourn alongside every single family that has lost loved ones, including the families of our great veterans.  Together, we will vanquish the virus, and America will rise from this crisis to new and even greater heights.

As our brave warriors have shown us from our nation’s earliest days: In America, we are the captains of our own fate.  No obstacle, no challenge, and no threat is a match for the sheer determination of the American people.  This towering spirit permeates every inch of the hallowed soil beneath our feet.  In this place, more than 200 years ago, American patriots stood their ground and repelled a British invasion in the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812.

Early on a September morning in 1814, the British fleet launched an assault on this peninsula.  From the harbor, some 30 British warships attacked this stronghold.  Rockets rained down.  Bombs burst in the air.  In the deck of one ship, a gallant young American was held captive.  His name was Francis Scott Key.

For 25 hours, Key watched in dismay as fire crashed down upon this ground.  But through torrents of rain and smoke and the din of battle, Key could make out 15 broad stripes and 15 bright stars — barraged and battered, but still there.  American forces did not waver.  They did not retreat.  They stared down the invasion and the held that they had to endure.  The fact is, they held like nobody could have held before.  They held this fort.

The British retreated.  Independence was saved.  Francis Scott Key was so inspired by the sight of our flag in the battle waged that the very grounds that he fought on became hallowed and he wrote a poem.  His ageless words became the anthem of our nation: “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Every time we sing our anthem, every time its rousing chorus swells our hearts with pride, we renew the eternal bonds of loyalty to our fallen heroes.  We think of the soldiers who spent their final heroic moments on distant battlefields to keep us safe at home.  We remember the young Americans who never got the chance to grow old but whose legacy will outlive us all.

In every generation, these intrepid souls kissed goodbye to their families and loved ones.  They took flight in planes, set sail in ships, and marched into battle with our flag, fighting for our country, defending our people.

When the cause of liberty was in jeopardy, American warriors carried that flag through ice and snow to victory at Trenton.  They hoisted it up the masts of great battleships in Manila Bay.  They fought through hell to raise it high atop a remote island in the Pacific Ocean called Iwo Jima.  From the Philippine Sea to Fallujah, from New Orleans to Normandy, from Saratoga to Saipan, from the Battle of Baltimore to the Battle of the Bulge, Americans gave their lives to carry that flag through piercing waves, blazing fires, sweltering deserts, and storms of bullets and shrapnel.  They climbed atop enemy tanks, jumped out of burning airplanes, and leapt on live grenades.  Their love was boundless.  Their devotion was without limit.  Their courage was beyond measure.

Army Green Beret Captain Daniel Eggers grew up in Cape Coral, Florida, determined to continue his family’s tradition of military service — and it was a great tradition.  He attended the legendary Citadel Military College in South Carolina.  Soon, he met a beautiful cadet, Rebecca.  They fell in love, married, and had two sons.

In 2004, Daniel left for his second deployment in Afghanistan.  On the morning of May 29th, Daniel and his team were courageously pursuing a group of deadly terrorists when he was killed by an improvised explosive device.

This week is the 16th anniversary of the day that Daniel made the supreme sacrifice for our nation.  He laid down his life to defeat evil and to save his fellow citizens.

At the time of his death, Daniel’s sons Billy and John were three and five years old.  Today, they have followed in Daniel’s footsteps — both students at the Citadel planning to serve in the military.  Their amazing mom Rebecca has now served more than 23 years in the U.S. Army.  Everywhere she goes, she wears Daniel’s Gold Star pin on the lapel of her uniform.

Colonel Rebecca Eggers and her two sons are here today, along with Daniel’s father Bill and mother Margo.  To the entire Eggers family: Your sacrifice is beyond our ability to comprehend or repay.

Today, we honor Daniel’s incredible life and exceptional valor, and we promise you that we will cherish his blessed memory forever.

Thank you very much for being here.  Thank you very much.  (Applause.)  Please.  Thank you.  Thank you.  Great family.  Thank you very much.

To every Gold Star family here today and all across our land: Our debt to you is infinite and everlasting.  We stand with you today and all days to come, remembering and grieving for America’s greatest heroes.  In spirit and strength, in loyalty and love, in character and courage, they were larger than life itself.  They were angels sent from above, and they are now rejoined with God in the glorious Kingdom of Heaven.

Wherever the Stars and Stripes fly — at our schools, our churches, town halls, firehouses, and national monuments — it is made possible because there are extraordinary Americans who are willing to brave death so that we can live in freedom and live in peace.

In the two centuries since Francis Scott Key wrote about the stirring sight of our flag in battle, countless other American patriots have given their own testimony about the meaning of the flag.  One was World War Two veteran Jim Krebs from Sunbury, Ohio.

Jim and his twin brother Jack fought side by side in General Patton’s Third Army.  At the Battle of the Bulge, the twins volunteered for a dangerous mission.  Together, they took out four enemy tanks, two machine gun nests, and a mothar [sic] position that was very powerful, loaded up with mortars.  Jim’s brother Jack was mortally wounded.  Jim held his dying brother in his arms, praying together as his twin passed away.

Jim fought to victory and came home to build a great American life.  He married, had children, became an electrical engineer, and taught young people about war.  As an old man, Jim was asked what about the American flag and what it meant to him.  Jim said, “The flag to me is as precious as the freedom that the flag stands for.  It’s as precious to me as the thousands of lives that have been lost defending her.  It’s that important to me; it gave me a value of life that I could have never gotten any other way.  It gave me a value of my Lord, my family, my friends, loved ones, and especially my country.  What more could I ask?”

Last month, Jim died peacefully at his home at the age of 94.  This afternoon, we are greatly honored to be joined by his grandsons, Andy and Ron.  Please, thank you very much.  Thank you very much.  (Applause.)  Thank you very much for being here.

Today, as we remember the sacrifice of Jim’s brother Jack, we honor Jim’s service, and we are moved by his beautiful words.  Andy and Ron, thank you for being here to remember your grandfather and his brother, and what they did for us all, and most importantly, what they stood for.

From generation to generation, heroes like these have poured out their blood and sweat and heart and tears for our country.  Because of them, America is strong and safe and mighty and free.  Because of them, two centuries on, the Star Spangled Banner still proudly waves.

For as long as our flag flies in the sky above, the names of these fallen warriors will be woven into its threads.  For as long as we have citizens willing to follow their example, to carry on their burden, to continue their legacy, then America’s cause will never fail and American freedom will never, ever die.

Today, we honor the heroes we have lost.  We pray for the loved ones they left behind.  And with God as our witness, we solemnly vow to protect, preserve, and cherish this land they gave their last breath to defend and to defend so proudly.

Thank you.  God bless our military.  God bless the memory of the fallen.  God bless our Gold Star families.  And God bless America.  Thank you very much.

5-26-2020 - The small island nation of Cyprus has received about 3,000 Muslim refugees this year, despite the coronavirus lockdown. The Cypriot government is now seeking to deport 17 of those Muslim refugees because of their ties to terror groups. Several have been implicated in terrorist incidents according to Interpol and Europol.

Details of the refugees, such as names and nationalities, have not been released. They are being held in a migrants' detention facility in Cyprus, and will be deportated as soon as air travel resumes following the current pandemic lockdown, according to authorities.

Turkey: Historical Greek Orthodox Church Being Destoyed by Turkish Treasure Hunters

The following is an unedited press release from International Christian Concern (ICC). Please check out their website at www.persecution.org for more on the persecution and genocide of Christians around the world.

Greek Church Victim of Turkish Treasure Hunters

05/18/2020 Turkey (International Christian Concern) – Christians in Turkey are warning that the historical Greek Orthodox Church located in the village of Yeşildere has been rapidly destroyed over the past five years because of treasure hunters. These hunters have stripped graves, excavated the building structure, and destroyed the garden. This warning comes as winter has ended, and this is the season when treasure hunters can easily dig since not many people live in the village during the winter. Villagers have asked the authorities to preserve the church and make it a tourist site.

The village used to have a strong Greek Orthodox presence, but the Turkish genocide against ethnic-Christians significantly led to the elimination of the Greek presence throughout the country. Turkey has never apologized nor recognized their role in the genocide, and instead continue implementing policies which ostracize those few surviving Greek Christians in the country. It is a common misperception in many Islamic countries that Christians have treasure. In some cases, such as this, the misperception leads to the destruction of cultural heritage sites which were emptied because of Christian persecution. In other incidents, such as the violent murder of a Greek Christian in Turkey last year, the misperception leads to the tragic loss of life.

American Pastor Held in India for 7 Months Finally Released

This is a follow-up to the October 10, 2019 story India: American Pastor from Tennessee Arrested and Detained. It is an unedited press release from International Christian Concern (ICC). Please check out their website at www.persecution.org for more on the persecution and genocide of Christians around the world.

Prosecution Drops Charges and Allows Pastor to Return Home After Seven-Month Detention

05/19/2020 Washington D.C. (International Christian Concern)International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that Pastor Bryan Nerren, an American pastor detained in India since October 2019, is now free to return home to his family in the United States. This news brings to an end a seven-month legal ordeal that began with Pastor Nerren being falsely accused of violating India’s Foreign Exchange Management Act.

According to the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), the charges against Pastor Nerren were dropped, and the prosecution withdrew its case on Friday, May 15. The judge overseeing Pastor Nerren’s case lifted the travel ban that has kept Pastor Nerren in India since October 2019, allowing him to return to the United States and reunite with his family.

On October 5, 2019, Pastor Nerren and two other pastors from Tennessee arrived in India to attend conferences in India and Nepal. The ACLJ reported that Pastor Nerren was targeted and arrested by Indian customs agents after he told them he was a Christian.

When the three pastors arrived in New Delhi, Pastor Nerren was detained by customs agents while proceeding through the domestic security check for a flight to Bagdogra. According to the ACLJ, Pastor Nerren was carrying funds to cover the expenses of two conferences and the two-week trip for himself and the other pastors. Customs agents questioned Pastor Nerren about the funds and their usage for about an hour.

According to the ACLJ, customs agents specifically asked Pastor Nerren if he was a Christian and if the funds would be used to support Christian causes. After fully explaining the usage of the funds, the customs agents told Pastor Nerren that he was free to go. However, when Pastor Nerren arrived in Bagdogra, he was arrested for violating India’s Foreign Exchange Management Act and transported to Siliguri, where he was incarcerated for six days and not allowed any visitors, including visitors from the US Consulate.

Pastor Nerren was able to secure bail after six days in jail. However, the judge overseeing his case retained Pastor Nerren’s passport and ordered a travel ban on the American pastor. Until the charges against him were dropped last Friday, Pastor Nerren was effectively trapped in Siliguri.

Religious intolerance and instances of persecution have steadily escalated in India since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a political party founded on a Hindu nationalist ideology, took power in 2014. According to the Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI), 147 instances of religiously motivated violence against Christians were documented in 2014. In 2019, after five years of BJP rule, EFI recorded 366 instances of religiously motivated violence against Christians.

William Stark, ICC’s Regional Manager for South Asia, said, “We here at International Christian Concern are happy to see that the false charges against Pastor Nerren dropped and that he is free to return home to his family. What is most concerning about Pastor Nerren’s case is how customs officials targeted him after he told them he is a Christian. No one should be targeted for any abuse because of their religious identity, especially in India. According to Article 25 of India’s constitution, individuals are free to profess, practice, and propagate their choice of religion. It seems that this constitutional protection was not given to Pastor Nerren. Instead, he was forced to endure seven months of detention in India because he identified himself as a Christian.”

Greece: Muslim Refugees Trash Orthodox Church, Now Use It as a Toilet

5-18-2020 - The Saint Catherine Church on the small Greek island of Lesvos was vandalized and trashed earlier this year by Muslim refugees. Now, the Greek news media is reporting that the Muslim refugees are regularly using the church as a toilet. The stench coming from the church is described as "unbearable."

The metropolitan of Mytilene, whose jurisdiction Saint Catherine Church falls under, has refused public comment on the situation. Speculation in the Greek media is the he is fearful of Muslim retaliation.

Lesvos is a small island of about 90,000 Greek residents. However, they host a Muslim refugee population of about 50,000. Numerous churches on the island have been vandalized by the refugees, threats have been made against Orthodox clergy, and police have been the target of Muslim harassment. In the latest incidents against police, Muslim refugees have begun intentionally coughing on police officers during the current coronavirus pandemic.

China: Violent Police Raid on House Church

By Timothy Gamble

5-5-2020 - The Chinese government continues its crackdown on Christianity. In the most recent incident, which ocurred on Sunday, May 3, police and local authorities violently raided a house church in Xiamen, in Fujian province, during the worship service.

Several Church members were injured during the process as police wrestled them to the ground and dragged them across the floor. Injuries included cracked ribs and multiple contusions to heads, arms, and chests.

At 9:00 am, dozens of police officers and other government officials raided Xingguang Church, as the members sang worship songs. Without any legal documentation, the authorities disrupted the service, calling the gathering “illegal.”

Several male church members blocked the entrance, but were only able to resist for a short period of time. It did not take long for the authorities to rush in through the door, yell at the members, while demanding them to stop recording with their cell phones.

Seeing the resistance, the police dragged several members out of the door and snatched their cell phones. In a video (link is to the video on Facebook) shared by preacher Yang Xibo from Xunsiding Church, the police can be seen pressing members’ heads down to the ground. Others yelled, “Stop filming!” to church members and neighbors who were recording the violent intrusion.

In another video (link is to the video on Twitter) shared by the Chinese Christian Fellowship of Righteousness, a church member accused, “You have entered my house, you grab our cell phones, you beat up people, you intrude violently. This is not allowed!” Xingguang Church meets at a residence, since they have refused to join the state-vetted Three-self Church.

China, which remains under strict communist control despite opening up to capitalism in recent decades,  has a population of over 1.4 billion people. The Communist Party in China, which is officially atheist, has approximately 70 million members. However, the strong growth of evangelical Christianity in China has resulted in slightly over 100 million Chinese Christians. The Chinese Christian population consists of approximately 75 million Evangelicals and 27 million Catholics. Also, the Chinese Orthodox Church, an autonomous Eastern Orthodox church, has about 15,000 members.

This situation of Christians outnumbering official Communist Party members is at least partially behind government crackdowns on Christianity over the last several years, as they seek to exercise control over Christianity in China. Communist governments, and all other collectivist regimes, demand that the citizen's top loyalty be to the State, not to God, the Church, or even the family. The State essentially sets itself up as God, and hates competition for that slot.

Egypt: Christian Woman Kidnapped, Forced to Convert to Islam

5-1-2020 - It has become almost commonplace in Egypt for Christian women to be kidnapped and forced by their captors to convert to Islam. Often, these new "converts" are then forced to marry Muslim men. It is difficult to rescue these women, as police and government officials often turn a blind eye the situation, and have even been known to harrass and intimidate the Christian families that report the kidnappings. Egypt is an overwhelmingly Muslim country with about 95% of the population being Muslim, and 5% mostly Coptic Christian.

In the most recent incident, a Christian woman, Rania Abd al-Meseh, was kidnapped on April 23rd by two veiled women in Monufia Governorate.  A video began circulating three days later of Rania announcing that she has converted to Islam. The video has been met with alarm by several Christians, who observe that her body language during the video appears that she is under great stress and saying the words under duress.

Rania is the mother of three daughters and her social media shows frequent posting of Christian material. Her brother Remon told local media that, “My sister was wearing the cross necklace and left home. So if she was wanting to convert to Islam, she would have left the necklace home.”

Rania remains in captivity, and family members have not seen or talked with her since the kidnapping. Police are not investigating.

India: Religious Persecution Highlighted by USCIRF’s 2020 Annual Report

The following is an unedited press release from International Christian Concern (ICC). Please check out their website at www.persecution.org for more on the persecution and genocide of Christians around the world.  For more information on the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) annual report for 2020, please see the article Algeria Officially Designated a "Religious Freedoms Violator".

04/29/20 Washington, D.C. (International Christian Concern) – International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has listed India among the world’s worst religious freedom violators in its 2020 Annual Report, released earlier this week. This is the first time that USCIRF has included India in its top tier of violators and recommended that State Department list it as a Country of Particular Concern. This development follows a serious deterioration of religious freedom in India over the past several years.

In power since 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have overseen a dramatic rise in intolerance and religiously-motivated violence across India. Modi and the BJP promote a brand of radical Hindu nationalism known as Hindutva and work to make India a Hindu rashtra rather than the secular nation it was founded as in 1947. This Hindutva philosophy views other faiths, such as Christianity and Islam, as foreign and their adherents as second-class citizens.

“Government action,” USCIRF’s Annual Report states, “created a culture of impunity for nationwide campaigns of harassment and violence against religious minorities…with most attacks occurring within BJP-ruled states.” The report goes on to discuss several specific topics of concern, including violence against Christians and the many baseless accusations of forced conversions levied against the Christian community. USCIRF counted at least 328 violent attacks against Christians in 2019 alone, a concerning increase over previous years. “These attacks frequently targeted prayer services and led to the widespread shuttering or destruction of churches.”

The national move towards Hindu nationalism, spearheaded by Prime Minister Modi, is to blame for the violence detailed in USCIRF’s report. Attackers enjoy nearly complete immunity as they harass and even kill—they routinely walk free while the survivors of their attacks face trumped-up criminal charges. 144 violent attacks against Christians were officially recorded in 2014, the year Modi came to power. That number has risen in the years since, with 2019 seeing an all-time reported high of 366. Reports suggest that only about 10% of all actual incidents are officially reported and included in this number.

Matias Perttula, ICC’s Advocacy Director, said, “USCIRF’s decision to include India in its top tier of religious freedom violators and its recommendation that the U.S. State Department list India as a Country of Particular Concern is highly commendable. It sends a strong message that the United States government will not accept the intolerance and violence condoned by Prime Minister Modi’s administration. I urge the government of India to take this message seriously and rigorously protect the rights of its vulnerable religious minority communities.”
