An Open Letter To PayPal

PayPal:

After being a PayPal user for many years, I have cancelled my account. The new acceptable uses policy (AUP) that PayPal announced last week, which contained language allowing your company to fine users up to $2,500 per incident for whatever you deem "misinformation," is the reason I have terminated my relationship with your company.

I realize that PayPal quickly backtracked on this policy change after receiving sharp criticism for it. PayPal now claims that the language was inserted by "accident" and that you will not be fining people for misinformation. I am glad for your change of heart on the matter.

However, even if this language was included by accident, the language had to exist for it to be included accidently. Someone with PayPal had to write that language. This is evidence that PayPal was or is at least considering making such a policy change, even if you didn't intend to implement that change at this time.

The fact that PayPal is even considering setting itself up as "judge, jury, and executioner," figuratively speaking, over the free speech of its customers is utterly and completely unacceptable. In my personal opinion, this makes PayPal not only unacceptably wrong, but potentially dangerous to myself and others who may hold political, religious, or social views contrary to what you deem acceptable.

I can no longer trust your company. Thus I cancelled my account.

Sincerely,

Timothy Gamble
Former PayPal User
