Wuhan Coronavirus Outbreak Update for Tuesday, Feb. 4

By Timothy Gamble

2-4-2020 - The official death toll from the Wuhan Coronavirus has risen to 427, with over 20,000 officially confirmed cases. It is likely that both numbers are actually much higher, as most experts agree China is severely under-reporting the true extent of the outbreak. Testimony of medical personal in China, as well as photos and videos, have leaked out and seem to confirm a much worse situation than the Chinese government is admitting.

The second death outside of mainland China has been confirmed in Hong Kong. The first death outside of China was in the Philippines.

The situation in the United States remains the same, with 11 confirmed cases. Tests results are pending on several dozen additional patients.

Worldwide Death Toll: 427 (425 in China, 1 in Philippines, 1 in Hong Kong)
Confirmed Cases in US: 11
States with Confirmed Cases: Washington (1), Illinois (2), Arizona (1), California (6), Massachusetts (1)
Countries with Confirmed Cases: China, United States, Canada
Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Nepal, Pakistan, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, France, Germany, Australia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Italy, Finland, United Arab Emirates, India, Russia, Sweden, Spain, the UK, and the Philippines.

Data sources: Johns Hopkins CSSEWHO, CDC, ECDC, NHC, and DXY.

Medical Face Masks

Medical face masks continue to be difficult to find at retailers and on Amazon, as increased news coverage has caused more buying. There is no true shortage of the face masks, and the masks are being restocked, but quickly sell out again. This is a supply-chain problem caused by all retailers trying to restock at the same time. Expect supplies to remain sporadic for the near future. (Click here for the medical face masks page on Amazon.)
