2-15-2020 - [UPDATE 6:40PM] China just announced another couple thousand new cronoavirus cases, and 139 more deaths.
Worldwide, there are now a total of over 69,000 official cases, with 1,666 deaths.
While the vast majority of cases and deaths are in mainland China, the Wuhan Coronavirus continues to slowly spread elsewhere. Egypt has become the first African nation to officially confirm a case of the virus. The first death outside of Asia has occurred in France.
In the United States, the total number of confirmed cases remains at 15, with no deaths.
How Bad Will It Get?
Concerns are rising among epidemiology experts that this outbreak may spread much further and last much longer than previously thought. A computer model designed by American and Canadain researchers predicts this pandemic may reach up to 4.4 million cases worldwide. Dr. Marc Lipsitch, a Harvard professor of Public Health, says this outbreak will likely be a global pandemic, with between 40% and 70% of the world's population being infected over the next year. Dr. Gabriel Leung, the chair of public health medicine at Hong Kong University, also predicts that up to 60% of the world's population could become infected. The CDC is warning that the virus will likely gain a "foothold" in the US, in which we will see a community spread of the virus, rather than just the isolated cases we have had so far.
