Coronavirus Updates for Feb. 25

By Timothy Gamble

UPDATE 9:45PM - South Korea reports 169 new cases, bringing their total to 1,146. Algeria reports its first case. In the United States, four more confirmed cases have been announced, bringing the US total to 57.

UPDATE 3:00PM - Italy reported 52 more coronavirus cases today, along with 3 deaths. Iran reported 34 more cases. Japan reported 10 more cases. Austria, Croatia, and Switzerland reported their first cases today, bringing the total number of countries with confirmed Wuhan coronavirus cases to 40.

2-25-2020 - The Wuhan cronavirus continues its slow march across the globe; now in 37 40 countries including China. In the Unted States, a California couple and a number of cruise ship returnees have tested positive for Covid 19, raising the number of US confirmed cases to 53. Fortunately, there is no indication of sustained local transmission of the virus in the US.

However, the situation is very different in South Korea, Italy, Japan, and Iran, where there is sustained local transmission and a fast raising number of confirmed cases and deaths.

South Korea: 977 confirmed cases and 10 deaths
Italy: 270 322 confirmed cases and 7 10 deaths
Japan: 160 170 confirmed cases and 1 death
Iran: 61 95 confirmed cases and 16 deaths

Italy, and perhaps Iran, will be releasing the numbers for new cases in a few hours. I will update this article to reflect those new numbers when they become available, so check back later today.

Worldwide, there are 80,289 confirmed cases* of the Wuhan coronavirus, officially named Covid 19, with 2,704 2,708 deaths.*
The virus is now in 37 40 countries, including China.

Data sources: Johns Hopkins CSSEWHO, CDC, ECDC, NHC, and DXY.

* China (and probably Iran) is severly under-reporting the true extent of the outbreak, according to most experts. Information leaking out of China indicates the real numbers of cases and deaths are likely 4X-5X the "official" numbers.
