BREAKING: US Airstrikes Kill Iranian General

1-2-2020 (9:00 pm) - Multiple sources are reporting that a US airstrike on a convoy at the Baghdad airport has killed Iranian Major-General Qassem Soleimani, head of Iran's elite Quds force, as well as Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces deputy-commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, among others.

Sources are also reporting that the Israeli military has been placed on high alert over fears of Iranian-retaliation. 

UPDATE (9:20pm) - Iraqi News agencies are reporting that Popular Mobilization Forces Head of Protocol Mohammed Ridhawas also killed in the airstrike.  

UPDATE (9:28pm) - Some sources are reporting that Naem Qasm, Hezbollah deputy leader was also killed. Reminder: all preliminary reports in a fast breaking news situation are subject to change as new information becomes available.  

UPDATE (9:57pm) - A statement released by the Pentagon reads, in part, "At the direction of the President, the U.S. military has taken decisive defensive action to protect U.S. personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a U.S. designated Foriegn Terrorist Organization.

General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region..."
